Just to say thank you for the information concerning efflorescence in newly laid block paving. I was really disappointed at the "white powder" that suddenly appeared on the paving days after being put in place

But having read your article on the efflorescence effect I was more than pleased to say the least about the effect should lessen over time. Before reading the article my knee jerk reaction was to by any product no matter the cost, that claims to cure the problem etc.
Patience I believe is the order of the day.
First class highly informative article...superb!

I have landscaped the garden in Thurston - Bury St Edmunds (paths , patio, water feature)and am now doing the same to the holiday home in Cyprus. Your website is a one-stop godsend source of professional, logical and concise information in a sea of myriad URL's on the web. I have referred to your site constantly and whilst I have the practical skills it's like you have been looking over my shoulder making sure I've been "Doing it right".
Thanks.

I was simply looking for what is needed to patch up a small private rear entry road behind my home that is getting potholed. I have spent 30 odd minutes after finding what I was looking for, many thanks.
Hope your health is OK.

You are the bees knees! I've used your site at every stage of the project, from getting the quotes all the way to supervising the selected contractor. The contractor's main aim was to get completed within 3 days and mine was to get work that would last according to my
preferred design.
You gave me the confidence and knowledge to stick to my ground with
specifying the design of foundations, gullies, steps; the lot.
A big thank you.

Thanks for making the effort. My first project was a 6m square patio in the middle of the yard and I was unsure how to screed it..steel conduit worked brilliantly.

Just wanted to say thank you for a wealth of info freely available on your site. I used to help my first husband with his bldg projects, but this is the first time I've undertaken a build on my own. It was simply a concrete pad/raft 1.5m square for a patio in my titchy front garden.
Being unemployed I have a miscule budget and I dug up stones for hardcore from the back garden, which being a newish house, is short on topsoil. I put the soil from the front into the back garden and made a square shuttering from wood I already had plus a couple of bits I blagged from the lovely man at our local Travis Perkins. Using the project discount at Wickes I bought bags of aggregate and cement and a cheap dustbin to mix the concrete in. One whole day and 8 loads later, I laid about 0.225m3 of concrete mixed by hand.
I completely agree with your comments about mixing by hand but 30 quid to hire a mixer would break the budget. Plus the lime burns subsided in a couple of days! This left me enough cash to buy 10 granodiorite (like granite but smaller grain size) flags today from a salvage yard in Willesden for 50 quid. I laid them out to get the best pattern like you said and tomorrow I'll lay them on a cement base. I'll probably use a bit of washing up liquid as a plasticiser.
I used your site to refresh my memory on method and quantities which was great. Total cost under 100 quid, but the pride of doing it myself as a woman of 45 - priceless.

Hi
I read with interest your advice regarding placing gravel over an existing surface. I am a post lady and have just had a very painful experience with just this scenario. My foot rolled down a slight incline on a customers driveway and didn't stop rolling until I had snapped my tibia and fibula and a spiral fracture down the fibula too. The driveway looked very pretty and tidy, unfortunately my left leg doesn't.

I want to thank you so much for this site! I've been looking for hours for info on installing concrete 2x2' slabs. This website is amazing, everything is so user friendly and the info is so straight forward. Honestly, it's be best I've ever seen. Congradulatons to you and to the web design.
I do have a queston, I'm not sure about. I am planning to use a sealant to go over my slabs, I'm using a dry sand method to fill in the slabs, will this be a problem?
Again congrats, if you guys were anywhere close to me I'd use and recommend you in a heart beat!

Hi Tony, an extremely informative site for almost first timers at laying a patio from scratch. However, for me, the facility to have our patio designed by you, to save us the headache and sleepless nights of trying to work out a "random pattern" from what we have had delivered has been an absolute delight! And the speed of response from initial enquiry to initial response was almost immediate, and then for final design was also like lightning! A very easy purchase experience. Thank you so much; not only will I have a patio by the end of the weekend, but peace has also been restored in our household too. I would, and will, highly recommend your services and website information.
