Even though I work in the Construction Industry, this site has been a fantastic help on the technical information whilst building my garden retaining wall & patio. Thanks very much, I will be passing on your details to anyone I know who will be embarking on simular projects. p.s. excellent links as well!

Excellent site. I discovered it after seaching the web to try and find out how to remove what I now know is called effluence. I forked out what was to me, a small fortune to have a patio layed using white and pinkish coloured flagstones. It was layed during an on off rainy couple of days. It looked great when finished and money handed over. After a few dry days I noticed the effluence, not just the whiteish markings but also boot and hand prints from the contractors. I have tried scrubbing with washing up liquid and patio cleaner but to no avail. I suppose I should just be patient for a couple of years and hope it wears away over time.

Excellent site!! I live in the desert, quite different than your environment. We have common needs world-wide and I have been seeking info and advice from many sources to help decide the ultimate look and sensible approach to installing a huge patio area surrounding our house. Contending with heat, wind and rattlesnakes make this an unusual project. The UK has beautiful brick and stonework, so old, so wonderful. Transition to new-age designs and techniques throughout the world continue to fascinate me. My original hometown was Alton, Illinois, situated on the Mississippi River. Our town brickyard supplied bricks during the early 1800s when we were a mere campsite along the river. Many of those paved areas and streets are still in use. Our limestone quarry cut blocks from bluffs which banked the river. These materials are also still present in buildings, walls, monuments, etc. Such a young history we have compared to your Stonehenge and castles. Remarkable, isn't it? Thank you for sharing your family trade. I highly recommend this site.

A fantastic resource, this site is like you always hope the internet will be. This will be the first time I've laid any paving, so the result still probably won't be perfect, but at least I'll have a fighting chance now.
