random....can't find the very recent thread that touched on randomness....
In middle '70's a good tiling friend of mine, wento lay large quarrys in a large living-rooom for one of The New Squeakers during the day. Please lay the tiles randomley - wos the note on the table - finally finishes at around seven, and v, pleased with result -
Returns in the morn to point, collect tools, & money etc., to find all quarry tiles pulled up, and in heap...
Martin ses - what's happened, you said lay them randomly?
Marty ses - yes, but I didn't mean THAT randomly.....

Martin quietly picked up his gear and left.

I know it's pedantic, but I cringe when I see the phrase "random pattern". A layout is either random, or it's a pattern. If it's a pattern, it isn't random, and if it's random, it can't be a pattern.

I must draw up a dozen random layouts each week, and I can guarantee half of them will come from architects or the sort of people who really ought to know better, but don't and ask for a "random laying pattern". Eeeurrrggghhh!!

Being even more cringingly pedantic, does something necessarily have to be symmetrical or repeat in order to be a pattern? ;)
