Hope you are well. I'm going to be on a job in a couple of weeks time that is going to require us breaking out about 150m2 of concrete(about 100mm thick) and replacing it with a granular sub-base. I had the bright idea of using a mini crusher instead of geting rid of all the hard core and importing type 1. I can't seem to find anybody who can hire me such a machine in Surrey. Can anybody help? The job is for a swimingpool surround. If you need a photo oportunity for any of this work please feel free to contact me.

got this one on a job at mo,which took 4 days to crush 370 sq.m of 3'x2' slabs,great little machine if a bit slower than we would have liked.we found the secret to speeding things up was not to over-feed the hopper and to sledge hammer a single slab into approx 24 bits before feeding it into crusher,we were crushing to an MOT type 1 size of stone,which slows things down slightly but does produce an excellent sub-base once hit with a heavy roller.this particular job had very bad (barrow only) access and we estimated we saved £900 on the job by crushing on site rather than removing to landfill and importing sub-base. we pay £90 per day hire.

if anyones got any experience of the red rhino wee crusher please post their results.my local stone supplier and haulage contractor isnt happy about seeing this machine appear on my jobs,but this is certainly the way forward for the small contractor,although i'm not ready yet to shell out the 18k required to buy the baby outright,maybye next year!

hi digdug, to save us testing out the red rhino can you expand on your knowledge of both machines in detail as i missed your thoughts on the original thread.

if i could correct my original thread,it took 4 days to crush 370 sq.m of 2'x2' slabs,using 4 gallons of red diesel per day and 2 men to crush - spread and complete the sub base,which was to an mot type 1 standard. the only "secret" i could suggest to speed up the process would be to underfeed the hopper,maybye digdug after sheeling out the required 18k could expand on this?

Well where do i start?
I take it you had the Tcp machine?
Slabs of 38mm thickness need to be on a smaller setting or they just drop through the jaw gap at the bottom. These do take a long time, but sound to me like you werent very organised! (no offence)
The trick is to get everything in a heap that you are going to crush first(space permitting)Then, feed into the machine and let the conveyor place it in a heap, then spread with an excavator, or into a dumper/barrows for placement where you want it. One man can operate and load the machine, and I guess another can do the barrowing if required.
The Tcp machine works best on thick concrete and brick, and you can have two spacers in place on the settings to achiove what you have managed. It is fast, and you can process around 20 tonnes in a day easily.
Slabs take the longest because of the smaller output settings required.
Red rhino eh? Well I have hired it a couple of times. It looks impressive and large enough to cope, but it isnt as impressive as the tcp for capabilities.
Heres a list or reasons:
1. You need a ladder to reach the inlet, which you have to continually unblock. Tcp jaw action means that you can fill up the hopper, and it will work its way down. Red rhino will get blocked. (plus you cant see into it) The height means it is best loaded with a machine, which means two operators (one feeding,one unjamming) plus a third for material placement.
2. It weighs around 2.5 tonne. Not easy to tow when you add the trailer weight.
3. It wont go through a 700mm gap unlike the tcp machine.
4. You cannot remove the conveyor, so you cannot process concrete posts or re-inforced concrete
5. It doesnt like kerbstones
6. it is around £10,000 dearer in price
7. It tracks Very slowly!
To be honest, It is best suited as a "back at base" machine, rather than a mobile piece of kit. that way you can crush into a heap and feed from it when you want.
It was starting a thread on this over a year ago that made me decide to buy one for rental.
Every one who has hired it has said how impressed they were with its capabilities and also that it the perfect size machine for builders and landscapers.
My machine was recently hired by a television company for ITV's "ministry of mayhem", where I had to deliver it and drive it onto the set. They threw toys and crockery through it though, so it didnt get a proper test!!
Well I hope you have enough information, but I will continue to provide as much of my knowledge to this thread as tony will allow me to!

This is an area that was supposed to be expanded on the mian site, but the guys I spoke to at SED way back in May never bothered to follow up with the info they promised. Maybe they think they don't need any free advertising!
The original thread on this subject does still exist, but this bloody stupid implementation of the Brew Cabin software pretends it can't see it. I may be moving to a different database structure in the coming week, and, if I do, that should resurrect the original thread, but I'm not holding my breath!
