I ve never done any bricklaying, only a few bricks, but want to practise, any ideas whet to build, i thought of a planter, if so do i need to leave drainage holes ? and lay on a foundation ? maybe 6 bricks high.

Yes you need drainage holes - allow for an 'empty' perpend joint every 4 bricks. And you'll definitely need a foundation if this is a permanent structure. Allow for 100mm spread either side of the brickwork and 100mm thick for bwk up to 10 courses (750mm) high.

Perpend is that the morter bit that goes up ? so i leave a gap every 4 brick going all the way to the top ? it wont be permanent see how it looks first before i get to that stage.

cheers

A perpend is the vertical joint between two adjacent bricks. There's a glossary of some of the more common bricklaying terms on the Brickwork Basics page.
