I am having an electric sliding gate fitted to my driveway. I need to get power and control cables to it from my house. The path distance trevalling under an indirect path is about 35 metres. I have a large pile of unwanted bricks and I was considering using the bricks laid two on their side and two flat on top (I-I) to create a channel for the electrical and control cables. The channel would be buried about 0.5 metres, be backfilled and have electrical warning tape at 15cm. I am considering getting cable telephone/tv and so this could be fed through at a later date.

Any thoughts on whether this is a gooer or not! Any alternatives?

I think it's a non-starter. Just threading a cable through all those bricks, even with the aid of a draw rope, would be a nightmare.

Genuine 40mm plastic ducting costs coppers per linear metre and you have the benefit of knowing that your cables are not going to snag, that the 'roof' can't break and collapse on top of your cable and adding additional or replacement cables will be a piece of pi...err...cake!

I thought as much!
Sometimes you need somebody to state the obvious to you!

40mm ducting it is then!

Just check with te gate installers about cable run. I have a feeling that on certain systems power and data / control cables need to be separted.
Might be for the sensor loops in ground only, but best check in case you need two ducts.
Ability.

It's OK

the power line is not in the duct - no need - duct only for control cable and telewest telephone/tv.

thanks anyway
