To drain my patio I'm thinking of connecting drain pipe into the downpipe from my roofs gutters.

From what I've read from this site that would breach regulations, but

1) who or how could you be caught?
2) could you be fined? How much?
3) anyone been caught and lived to regret it ?

Apologies, not a very politically correct question......

Garden slopes towards house.

Thought connecting to downpipe would be easiest and most effective method, but, not the right way to do it.

Would it be against SUDS to remove a brick from a boundary wall and direct rainwater through it, from there it would run onto public footpath instead of being directed towards house? Walls only one brick thick - don't think it impossible to remove one brick for outlet.

the driveway legislation regarding surface water drainage covers driveways only from the front elevation of your property to the pavement

you patio does not need to conform to any Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and neither does the side elevation of your property

Hi mick, thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.

Have I understood your reply correctly by thinking SUDS is not relevant as any rainwater would naturally fall towards my house?

As a result of this would it be ok to connect to my downpipe and discharge my patios rainwater into public system ?

my answer was related to you saying patio on your original post then garden garden slopes towards the house on your next post, a photo always helps us give the correct answers as we are doing this blind due to not seeing your house and the layout

SUDS is only required for a driveway at the front of the property and a patio would normally be at the rear of the house therefore if this is the case you don't have anything to worry about with surface water from the patio and it can be connected to the existing surface water drainage system at the rear or side of your property
