Well, thanks to this site and the people who answered my querries, I have successfully completed 2 jobs outside.
One was the drive extension, where I used 120mm of DTP1 sub base on about 50mm of broken/smashed concrete, compacted it down for about 2 hours, then laid about 30mm or so of Cumbrian Red stones on top of that. I can drive/park my car on it and it does not churn up or go loose, as I hoped it would not. It is quite a solid piece of ground.
The other job I did was to renew a pathway at the front of the house which was a mixture of shades and deteriating finish of concrete. I used about 40/50mm of sharp/grit sand mixed with 1 part cement to 10 sand on top of about 30mm broken/smashed concrete. I left a very small gap of 6mm or less between the flags, and then filled the joints with a 4:1 dry mix of sand/cement. This path only carries very light foot traffick, so I am hopeful it will last a long time.

Thanks again to all concerened for your help and advice.
