Hi All,

Hopefully a quick question! We are having a new patio of roughly 11m x 5m using 20mm Granite Slabs (900x600). I was expecting these to be laid on a full mortar bed but my builder is suggesting just mortaring the edge slabs and bedding the remainder on sand only (+compacted hardcore) - is this usual?. He did say this would save money but I'd rather have the job done right for the sake of some additional cement for a full bedding mix.

Cant seem to find much on granite patio laying so any advice would be useful.

Thanks! :)

Only very well calibrated slabs can be laid well on a screed bed. Those are usually wet cast concrete. 20mm natural stone needs to be laid on a full mortar bed.

he is talking shite
all slabs/flags must be laid on a cementious bed
block paving and PCC slabs are laid on sand but thats a different method
its as easy to do it right as it is to do it wrong

Not sure why you would even consider it, buying decent stone then laying it on crap.
I recommend not letting this builder anywhere near the stone, get someone who lays patios day in and day out to do it for you.
