Hi,

I have recently had some building work done which has included the building of a patio with steps leading down to it. The slabs for the patio level are the same material as that used for the steps (blocks that look like rough stone but are obviously made in a mould of some kind).

The builder has put mortar between the slabs on the steps, but not on the patio flat surface. When I queried this, he said that this should not be done because it might 'crack the paving slabs'. I find this hard to believe, but would like the opinion of an expert before going back to him and insisting that this is done. Can someone please advise me?

So he's jointed the flags on the step treads and not jointed the flags on the patio?

If so he talking rubbish.

Yes, he's just left all the gaps so that weeds are starting to come through already. So, there is no possible argument for what he has done, you think? We can confidently say 'No, never mind cracks, do the mortaring'?

Id say so yes!! there is no reason i can think of to not joint patio flags, especially not for the naff reason he has given you, what sort of flags are they?

If you've got weeds growing up through a freshly laid patio then I'm sorry to say but you have more to worry about than unfinished mortar jointing.

In fact, I can't forsee how that's even possible.

Its probably laid on quarry dust or some other totally unsuitable material.

He sounds like he has zero clue how to lay paving or is purposefully treating you like an idiot

As Mrs Slocombe used to say, "I'm unanimous in that".

Your "builder" is an eejit. I do seem to be saying this quite a lott of late!
