At present, our path runs across the face of our house from the porch steps - about 8m length, almost 2m wide. It has a drop of about 20cm from path-level beside the 8m length, and beside this is the upper limit of our sloping gravel drive. At present there is a line of bricks/blocks edging a concrete path. There are three vertical layers of bricks in this "retaining wall", which is just one brick thick.
As we are hoping to lay paving slabs (450sq or 600sq we think), I was wondering how you would suggest I deal with this edge...
1. Would it be possible to run the slabs right up to the edge and have the edge slabs bedded on a pre-set concrete base at the appropriate thickness?
2. Can I use the blocks that would normally be used for edging to replace this retaining wall at the original height? If so should I make it single width of blocks or does it need to be a double width for strength?
3. Finally, if these edging type blocks are not suitable to be used in this way do you have any other suggestions as to how I should edge a 20cm drop beside a run of paving?
