Hi
Does anyone know where you can buy type 3 MOT in small quantities? I'm laying a small path in my garden that needs a good draining base and I'm reluctant to use type 1 as it's much less free draining. I don't need much being a shortish path but I can only seem to buy huge quantities of Type 3 online.
Is there an alternative material I could use that's easier to get hold of?

I'll be laying gravel on top. The gravel will be 20mm itself as it's left over from the driveway I'm doing at the front garden.
The path is going at the bottom of the rear garden where it does get very soft in wet weather but I do have land drains running under it that I installed last year that deals with that really well.

Thanks for the advice, I have some pavemas 95 membrane ready to go down.
Just one more on type 3, is it as strong as type 1 once compacted? Reason I ask is I'm just about to fill my new driveway with 125mm deep of Type 1 with gravel on top and wondered if having type 3 would be better?
I'm guessing I'd need a a deeper fill of type 3 over type 1?

Type 3 will move laterally if you are laying gravel directly on top even with the membrane. If you are placing the decorative gravel into plastic geo grids, then your type 3 would probably work but the grids need to be bedded on sand. That would require another layer geotex to prevent the sand filtering into the voids of the type 3.
Type 1 is cheaper, less complicated and in my opinion the better option.

they are using type 2 or 3 on the M1 jct10A new work near me
sort of 30-50mm as a capping layer
IMHO its total overkill for a garden path
I would use tanalised path edgings and have the path 25mm above the lawn
then use type 1 and 10mm gravel
IMHO 20 mm shingle is good for backfilling pipes and that alone

For a garden path, even the reduced drainage capability of Type 1 should be adequate. Type 3 is intended for larger areas as it provides attenuation (storage and gradual draining to the ground). For a path, the (assumed) narrow width means surface water can be shed to either side and this principle applies sub-surface as well, so any water penetrating the sub-base has the chance to escape laterally as well as vertically.

Thanks for the advice, I'll have some type 1 and cotswold gravel left over from doing the drive so that'll go in the path.
Not sure on having the path 25 mm above lawn level? I plan to have it just below lawn level for ease of mowing, no trimming of the grass around the edgings and no trip hazards.
