I put some masking tape on slate to stop the cement going over the surface while laying them.
Trying to remove the tape tried warm water but its not coming off at all, if i try using something sharp it scratches the slate.

Any ideas how to remove it?

I would guess some kind of solvent mate, white spirits perhaps?
obviously try on an out of the way area first
masking tape is a bastard if left on too long

lighter fluid done the job but left slight stains hopefully will wash away over time?

Does slate need sealing?

The lighter fluid (it has a complicated chemical name: petrol) will eventually evaporate and leave very little, if any, stain in its wake.

Good quality slate doesn't *need* sealing but some folk believe it looks better/resists staining/lasts longer (all bollocks, of course) when a sealant is daubed all over it.
