quality recycled aggregates should be sourced and processed to prevent contamination. recycled doesn't always mean its cheaper, but you can wear the green badge by saving natural mineral resources.

the best bet is to ask for the specification, i.e. MOT type 1 to SHW 800, block laying sand to BS 7753 etc. the danger can lie with a supplier calling it 'subbase', and the customer assuming it's Type 1. you can ask for certification or data sheet.

All the stuff we're getting is Certified now, but plenty in the past hasn't been, hence we got done. I've been to a few clients houses in the past few years who've bought by themselves or "Landscapers", "Cheap" top soil, which on inspection is full of broken glass, old plaster, builders rubble and usually smells of bin bags. They've always bought it advertised cheap and it ends up ruining their Garden, killing the Lawn or setting hard. One customer told me of a quote she'd had, in rival to mine, and they told her they only use crush under lawn because it gives a better level!!

Yeah, had a load of that soily "sand" before. The recycled topsoil is no use either, it goes rock solid. Had 7 tons of recycled type 1 a few weeks back, had half bricks, 100mm lumps of concrete, the odd wee bit of rebar, some soil and wood chippings, half a newspaper and the centre page of a scud mag! Theres more i could tell you but not publicly lol

I agree with Big Phil on this one, it all depends on what it is being sold as. I know a lad that runs a large demo company and he sells all sorts of recycled materials. In his exact words, you get what you ask for, recycled type1 be it crusher run etc you get to the BS spec, but ask for sub base and you could end up with a mixture of soil, brick etc to basically build up levels.
