Richard, the lad who makes the Paver's Markers, keeps telling me he's going to add an online order form to his website (which I manage) but it never actually happens.

If you give him a call (he's not brilliant with the emails, either!) he'll send some out pretty sharpish.

Going back to the PaveTech kit, you have to understand that the market in the US and Canada is highly professionalised and, unlike the situation in Britain and Ireland where any taxi driver can suddenly decide he's a paving contractor, they have to be trained, insured and licensed.

This leads to better pay rates, relatively speaking, and so the contractors spend more on proper kit (much the same in Germany where you rarely see manual laying), which in turn means companies supplying such kit are more abundant, prices are keener because of the competition, and the finished jobs are often of a much higher standard.

Over the years a good few people have tried bring professional kit into the British/Irish market but too many paving gangs are extremely reluctant to invest in proper tools. They'll piss about with a succession of short-lived barrows rather than spend on a proper block cart, and they'll bend a spade to buggery and back straightening a line of blocks before they'll buy a proper alignment bar.

Because we allow any Tom, Jock, Taff or Mick to set themselves up as paviors, this keeps prices (and skill levels) unfeasibly low, so no-one invests in their kit, which keeps quality levels low, which keeps prices low....and the circle goes round and round.

When you look at the better-than-average gangs (and the average is pretty bleeding low, to be honest!) you see that they *do* invest. They will have block carts, splitters with new blades, screeding systems which allow you to work from an upright position, proper neoprene soles on the plate compactors. They do a better job, they command a better price, they can then afford to invest, and they do an even better job....another circle, but at least this one is going in the right direction!

Why has he taken the markers off eBay though?

Might give pave tech an email, see if they'll ship over here. I like that bendy rod set up for marking curves out, miles better than my drain rod system!

that bendy rod thingy, probst make and sell over hear. been on sale hear since last summer, I was going to buy one once but never did,most of that stuff it exactilly the same as probst sell in UK MSH
