just got back from 4 days in spain fishing on the ebro for cat fish.

im not a fisher man but went with my mate and his dad and mates who are all fishermen.

i didnt catch but we had a 96lbs a 94lbs a 64lbs, a 60lbs and a 27lbs, mine got away left a scar on the 8 pound live mullet we were using as bait. last week the guides had a client get a 183lbs er but think we were just after spawning so all the fish were guarding the nests

cracking two days fishing 8 hours on the river with beer and banter, a right laugh at the local brothel. i didnt indulge but a few did haha.

so got back early hours from 30 degrees c to 8 and rain take me back lol

pics are here

this was great fun, even my 8lb mullet live bait was a struggle to pull in when it didnt want to hehe

watcing it swim round then flee rapidly from a cat was good fun, cold beers in the cooler sun shinning top trip :)

just wished id got a caught one, my mullet got grabbed i wound in then hit it but it got away :( its a right buz though watching your float go under hehe might make a fisherman out of me yet, all day saw 20lbs+ carp jumping out the river around us. the lads want to do a week next year 3 days on the cats and 3 days on the carp

I think the Ebro Catfish is a protected fishery and they have to be released you wouldn't want to eat anything that big anyway the a general fishing rule is the bigger they are the worse they taste with a few exceptions. Also you would be mad to eat anything from a large river in a populated area. Fishing for trout on the fly is my Nirvana.

our guide said there were no laws against taking fish, the spanish are nomally fairly quick on the case when they see something messing up a lucrative tourist income.the sooner the better,

Nice one Giles. If you wern't a fisherman before, you are now! One of my mates was on the ebron for a week and they caught shed loads.

I was out in India in February fishing for Masheer in the Kauvery river. Probarbly the best week of my life. Went with my dad, 2 brothers and best mate. No phones, no work, no women and plenty of booze, banter and fishing. We booked up for next year the week we got back

My mate with a 30lber

Image

My dad with a 25lber. He was absolutely buzzing. He'd never caught a fish over 10lb before the trip.

Me with a 35lber

The bait we used

One night my mate hooked a fish and his reel jammed and the fish dragged him down the river bank for 30 yards before the 40lb line snapped.

the laws say they have to kill the cat fish as they are a non native species, german guy released them 30 years ago theyve desimated teh local fish and all the big carp are gone, they say the romanians are more responsible for that. under 15lbs you can eat the cat fish but the ebro is so polluted you wouldnt, we spent a lot of time fishing by a chicken factory that killed and cooked 40,000 chicken a day so all the mullet bait fish were at the pipe were there was blood and feet and skin being pumped out into the river. my live bait mullet was about 6lbs haha, funny watchng them swim over some where then flee from the big cats.

of course they dont as its bad for business and killing a 183lb cat fish cant be easy

our guide had just got back from fishing in india for those fish said it was amazing

link to guys blog from india

we were fishing with sea rods and 100lbs twin braid line
