the conifers are 10 m away ,but these people call the shots
its a council job and their people have already specified it

I have shored up deep trenches before at 2.7m for hand dig when i was young and foolish but not really keen to go down that far now

i would possibly go down the raft route. i think its faster and easier.

You don't use a machine, well maybe a micro or 1.5 tonner to help,you use a grundomat mole, dig a 400x500 say trench then start your first pile a 150mm hollow metal spike, drop some dry mix concrete in then drop the mole in and let it works it way down, the compressor can be out on the rd then once the first metres in you weld another metre section of pipe on and keep going till you reach a redistance calculated by engineer in mm a min fill the pile with self compacting concrete then insrt an L bar. Tie it all together with steel then pour ground beam.
