I use both yellow pages and thompson local, as adverts have a cost per year, it is more likely a company will still be alive, then if I search the web. (websites are too cheap and easy to create)

However most of the time I just use google to find the phone number when I know the name.

Waste of money, spend your 4-500 on a website (£200), some search optimisation (£200) then spend the other £100 on adwords.

You,ll get more work in a month that way than you would in a year with any directory

My websites cost 250 including the logo design process, i own the sites so they cant be taken from the company as soon as they attract hits etc, each year its £25 to keep it live.. £800 is very expensive. Im happy to pass details of my guy to anyone who is interested, dan pm me and i will give you loads of info that im frankly not going to share online to people who may be potentially my competitors... ;) I bet i can double the leds you are getting now

For £800 they will do all SEO required.
I've got some guides on SEO if anyone wants to have a read, helped me get my site on 1st page of google!

Most the jobs I've had (from the Internet) are insurance work.

Yes. Search engine optimisation is what gets your website found on google.

So if someone searches "paving in Preston" good SEO will get you on 1st page of google, where you need to be.

Mate of mine has just paid over £300 for a site but no matter what I search for his website isn't in the top 10 pages.
(I'm glad cos he's my main competitor!)
