You guys who employ people.....what do you do payroll-wise?

Does your accountant do it (£££!!) - or do you do it in-house?

I ask as we have long-serving person in the office who has done wages/PAYE manually since the year dot - and now it all has to be entered/calculated using software on a computer.

This is where the problem lies - she isn't computer literate. She also has a year or so to go until she retires. Basically - "If I've now got to do the payroll on the computer, I'm off" is the vibes I'm getting.

What do you guys do?

sage payroll,done in house.training and updates done by our accountants. i could get our accountants to do the whole thing for us,just submit weekly details,which they charge a small fee. it takes about 1 hr, once a week.

I do it all myself using sage and the software you get from HMRC. It isn't difficult
Only thing my accountant does is end of year figures.

Thanks for the replies so far; as I'm the IT co-ordinator (i.e the only one in the company who understands PCs etc etc) this is going to land in my lap.......

Up until a few weeks ago when we closed our shop. I have done the payroll on a Pc for about 15 years.
Last year I got fed up with the cost of running Sage ( if you do a search you will find many people saying the same)
I took their advice and moved over to Moneysoft Payroll manager. For up to 20 employees it cost about £56.00 + vat a year a lot less than sage.
Doing the payroll for 6 staff would take about 5 minutes thats including printing the payslips.

Yes, I've installed that, will have a nose around when I'm back in the office. Have only got three employees to administer, so shouldn't be too bad. Thanks for your help.

I've always used the HMRC software for both Paye and CIS and they're nothing special but do the job for me. Everyone gets paid by Bacs and the payslips are emailed. The software is very basic though and there's always gremlins in it 2010 being of considerable note and it would be handy if the payslips could be autofilled once the gross pay has been entered because it's all a bit of a pain every week. I don't think I've ever paid for any software in my life.
