I used to do the Marshalls Transformation centre jobs based from their Bramhall Site, So from our Yard in West Yorkshire it was 45miles each way. We had to set off at 5:30 or your sat on the M62/M60 for the morning. Then your sat supping coffee in Stockport McD'd for an hour. waiting for the sun to come up. We would commute as far south as Lymm but Holmes Chappel we got digs. Its all good untill you hit your first 20mile tailback. When that dried up we did remedial work for Marshalls and spent alot of time based in Falkirk then travelled all over Scotland from their, usually 3 days at a time. Then we used to chase work in the affluent areas Harrogate, North Leeds and Wetherby all only 15 miles from us but can still take you and hour each way. We have'nt travelled over 5 miles for the last 18months and our business plan now is to be the first choice Landscapers/builders in our village and the 6 surrounding village. Its a lot easier to make money when you can easily work from the yard and only need 75quid a week diesel for a Truck and 2 vans.

DN, thats the way im working at the moment. Day rate, and I detest it.
Always worked on price, crack on with the job, early dart when I wanted one and made alot more money.
But with work not being great the last 18 months, I have had to revert to contracting to a firm pretty much full time on a day rate. Vans trackered and everything, its a joke. Working for someone whos not from the building background but is the money man. Constantly thinks lads take the piss when in reality we all pull our back out for a steady day rate!

Its a wage at the moment, and a lot better one than I see when you start looking on job sites. £9-£10 ph for a bricklayer!
But as soon as I can get back on price im off!!

we have done 100 miles each way on a select few jobs, but we have contract work on sites that are 60 miles and 80 miles from our yard. Have travelled from one side of Scotland to the next, and been sent all the way down to Engerland for work too, my gaffers rule of thumb is if it pays, or if it will bring in work that will pay well - go for it

I've been racking up a 1000 mls a week for the last 3 weeks up at 4am home for 7:30pm and worked up The NW most of last year , it does take its toll on the body and family life cos your fecked come the weekend as I am now! I bought an LPG conversion before last christmas for this reason alone ( well it was cheap too...)

it costs me about £180 a week at the moment but it's comfy after a hard days graft. Price is great if the price is right..!

How much you getting charged for LPG? In Edinburgh it's 78.9, I know we get ripped off here just not sure how much by

Can get some great deals on older model luxury cars, jaguars, mercedes etc big engine but affordable when they have the LPG conversion.

Same here, I'd travel practically anywhere our known and trusted customers would want us to travel to.

Have had some epic nights out when working away! :)

Fareham last year for a two-day machine job in a large station car park was rather notable - we had to be on site for 7am ready to go.....6.25am we were all still away with the fairies after a heavy night out.

It was a busy shift with very few gaps, nothing to eat until 10am-ish, not good.
