lot of good men go way too young due to smoking
when i had my heart scare a couple of years ago the cardiac ward was full of smokers in their 40's and 50's
dying around me
1 of the greatest workers i ever knew, ken french was reduced to 7 stone in 3 months by tobacco and then killed by it

i cant see someone sueing you for letting them smoke at work, its a personal thing, they could maybe sue you for making them bend over laying big flags eventually nakering their back or using a wacker plate for to long and getting white finger but not for something they know is bad but they personally decided to do it anyway, complete rubbish IMO.

Ye but going down the same route, you could be sued for allowing your employers to slouch in their van seat or allowing them to eat junkfood at work......its just stupid, if they wanna smoke and its outdoors and the customer isnt fussed, then whos arsed? Being a LTD company has newt to do with h&s policy neither as far as im aware, LTD status involves liability issues/tax/financial and accounting affairs.

I allow smoking in open spaces but they know not to do it near me and definately not near the client. The biggest hidden danger to construction type employers these days is liability for skin cancer. Basically it's something that can be prevented by proper clothing and the provision of sunscreen both of which i provide and ensure they adhere to. If you ask someone to work all day in the sun and don't provide advice and protection there's a very high chance of you being found negligent. Oz and the US lead the way in cases of this nature and it's on the way here.

Smoking, along with booze and obesity are a big burden on the NHS. I'm not on about people who are overweight because of an illness, such as under active thyroid, just the ones who eat too much and are bone idle. We have smoking areas on our job but the smokers encroach on the non smoking area making it impossible for me to eat outside at a table because of smoke, dirty dog ends in old tea coffee cups etc: Ban it in the work place i reckon.

Fair points made boys but numbers don't add up. Smokers make our goverment 11.1 billion in tax revenue and alcohol is 8.2 billion. The NHS spends 7.7 billion on smoking and alcohol related illness, leaving a whopping 11.6 billion. So stick that in your 5th party passive pipe and smoke it!

really Haggi can you prove those figures or are they simple sums that don't stand up to scrutiny. Also tax income is calculated nationally NHS expenditure is only quoted for the country you live in meaning Scotland and ni aren't included and we're a bunch of proper fat bast*rds. Have you and Cookie gone your separate ways now I thought you made a good couple.

Figures are out there if you look. I don't think our goverment really wants us all to quit and buy a Prius do you? Yes we have gone our separate ways for now but who knows what the future brings....still mates none the less.

I`ve now been 12 weeks without a smoke as I dont miss it to be honest. All that standing in the cold and rain, walking 10min there and back to the smoking point etc. Plus I`m at least £40 a week better off.
God loves a tryer

Those numbers don't take into account the money paid out when you are too ill to work, with diabetes, lung cancer, liver damage etc; not to mention the legacy you pass on to your children and leave them the bill to put you in the ground. How much do you smoker's, drinker's overeater's spend each day, week , month, a year and a lifetime, although we probably will save money because you go to an early grave. Can't stick it in my pipe and smoke it because i'm a non smoking, teetotalling, average weight healthy individual. So stick that in a roll up and suck on it. :;): :p :)
