These are my worries!! My 16yr old son wants to join me in business. He has just got 10 good gcses, but is adamant that he does not want to do A levels. Instead he`s going to college to do an NVQ in construction.
I really would like him to join me in the business but I only have a turnover of 60-70k. The majority of our work is domestic landscaping e.g paving, decking etc...
What would you guys do? encourage him back into school or allow him to join you in the business learn the ropes and help to expand it.
I am a sole trader 15yrs trading.
I have a dilema

If he wants to go and get an NVQ, then let him - hell I had a ball at college!!! Some of the best years of my life.
Get that out of his system and then see what he wants to do. The NVQ would give him a good basic standing to come into the business beside you.

it was a similar situation with me and my old man back in 84
I lucked out and got 8 o'levels after doing maths and english when i was 14 and passing them
my family and my teachers said college==> uni==> scientist
I started work at an american firm "coulter electronics" as a trainee test technician
and lord how i hated it
every second, every minute and every day
the only ray for me was an ex professional boxer mo,who i got matey with and we had a craic at lunch times
anyway after 15 month of purgatory i got a job as a scaffolder's labourer,my old man found out and went mad etc etc
and i ended up working with him for 4 years
but i think if its in your blood its in your blood
it certainly is in mine
if your lad has the grey matter get him to do business studies as well, too many good builders go skint because they cannot manage the business side of what they do
also marketing and strategys
good luck
