Dhaka to Mandalay (part 2)

Afters yesterday I felt a lot better so was ready to take on the world yet again - "BRING IT ON".

Booked out of the hotel which was a very nice one - it even had ladies offering things for $5.00 but had to decline as I need all my energy :-)

Got to the airport for 6.15am and got the handling agents on with the ADC clearance (Air Defence) straight away and immigration. Then I was out to my quik but as we got outside a storm had just gone through and everything was flooded! Great stuff and we were doing so well.

The guys at the aero club pulled the quik out and I asked if they had any fuel "sorry we only have enough Avgas for ourselves - but we do have Mogas if it is any use???". "Fill her up, it’s better". Just 40litres but it’s better in than not!.

Climbed into the quik in the hot sun which was now baking hot and I was just wet through with sweat. By now a big crowd had now gathered around to watch me off.

I Gave ATC a call and I got cleared to taxi "G-CDVO taxi Golf, Sierra to Charlie". So off I go following the yellow lines and trust me if you don’t follow them you can soon get lost in these big airports. I get to Charlie and he says "can you pull up a bit closer to aircraft in front please G-CDVO". "G-VO negative he has two big fans that will blow me away", "ok". That aircraft took off and I got cleared to line up and cleared for take-off straight away. "G-CDVO climb out straight 3,000ft and maintain".

Well as soon as I got to 2,000ft I was in cloud so 1,900ft it was. "G-CDVO request 2,000ft to remain VFR", "approved G-VO". Good job he did as straight after that I could see rain everywhere.

It started closing in around until YES, I was in it very hard rain, couldn’t go right it was harder and to the left so tucked my hands in to the middle of the base bar and got very wet,

It was raining that hard on me I couldn’t see though my Visor (it had rained in on the inside as well) or through the windscreen and the water was also starting to fill my pod up.

So it was flying with the Visor pulled up getting wet in the face, and I was also worried about my Propeller! Would it be ok? I have seen what water jets do to steel! And would I be ok for that matter.

Luckily The rain cleared up for a short while, and as it did two Bangladeshi Air force jets passed by at the side of me only a short distance away, in fact it was probably the same two that took off from Dhaka just before me (forgot to mention that).

I am still at 1,900ft and ATC said stop at that height all the way please don’t go up or down maintain 1,900ft "not a problem sir" - must be the military just making sure they knew where I was. I was in and out of cloud, and going around the bigger ones, but still at 1,900ft as being told, but then!!!!..

All I could see was a wall of rain in front I can’t get through that! But the coast looked clear so I made out to it.

It started raining again but the visibility was really bad now ,in fact so bad I was struggling to see the ground and I had to drop to only at 1,000ft. I told ATC where is was and why but they were fine as I was out of the military way there. Headed out to sea and it did clear up a bit.

I looked inland and the whole ground was now covered in cloud and rain, so i carried on as it looked clear ahead, as I was getting close to Chittagong there was a massive cloud formation of storms and rain completely covering the 10,000ft of mountains I needed to cross to get to Mandalay.

Was it going to clear before I got there???...

I had just gone past Chittagong and it was black and down to the ground Mandalay isn’t happing today so I gave Chittagong a call.

"G-CDVO Chittagong". "G-CDVO inbound to yourselves requesting landing information". "G-CDVO hold down wind for runway 27 while we check your ADC". So there I am orbiting while a big storm is coming right at me only a few miles away and there saying we just need to check your permits in order, more bothered about paperwork than me! I got cleared to land and it was nice just to have a 15knt wind for a change than the 25knt ones I have been getting.

I landed and taxied in to a marshal waiting, then I was surrounded by around 40 people, and how friendly they all were.

"Hello Captain we welcome you to Chittagong and how may we help you", "I need my flight plan closing". "Don’t worry Captain we have already taken care of it for you". "Is there any where I can park out of the storms for the night?". "Only anchor point in the ground sir if that’s any good, we haven’t anywhere to put anything under cover?".

So I was taken to a point on the Apron between the jets boarding tunnels and there was some big rings concreted to the ground - "EXCELLENT, THAT WILL DO".

But by now the storm had moved in and it was raining and blowing my quik about fairly violently, a quik exit from It, and a bit of help I had it tied to the ground before it really started blowing and raining. Then I was taken to immigration which took ten minutes to sort out, I asked him if he knew a good hotel; "yes sir, get a cab to the peninsular hotel". So after immigration I went to the arrivals door and was surrounded by men trying to grab me and my bags to help - "get off me". "But sir you need help". "Get me a taxi to the Peninsula". And one lad says "I’m a taxi" - I thought no you’re not that’s my joke. "How much to hotel Peninsular?". "$20". I Got thrown in to the van, and all the other men around are saying "but you give me money". "What for?". "Because I help you get taxi". "No you didn’t. Get lost". Then a security guard said "you give him money, he has earned it" - so I threw him a dollar and he moaned. I said "you're not getting anything else, this taxi driver is earning his money - you're just trying to rob me" and the guard just said "go".

The hotel was a good 30 mins drive so his $20 was well earned. Chittagong I have to say isn’t one the richest cities, but there were a lot of poor people around in slums. Also Chittagong is an amazing place all down the beaches to the west is covered in old cargo ships that get scrapped. They drive them aground then just cut them up, AMAZING VIEW FROM ABOVE

I got to the hotel and it was ok, I had to get out in the basement to stop being harassed. I got fed and watered in its small bar with a very nice chicken stir fry with vegetables and then to bed.

See If I get to Mandalay tomorrow.

Dave
