I'm not a great telly watcher, but in the interest of continued breathing I make an effort over the holidays to spend the evening in the same room as Mrs Taz and with no laptop to entertain or distract me.

So she has this new Upstairs Downstairs on. I remember the original yawnfest from when I was a lad and it just wasn't a patch on Starsky and Hutch, so why anyone would want to do a re-make is beyond me.

Then I noticed an exterior shot. Vintage motors, pedestrians in period costumes, kids playing hoops or hopscotch, and all on the pavement paved with 450 x 450mm (E70) concrete flags, laid stackbond against a HB2 concrete kerb and with CBP accommodation at the rear edge!

The set designers make a huge effort with the costumes and the interiors and even manage to eliminate the yellow lines/parking bay road markings (although you could see burn marks in some places) but then completely miss the fact that modular concrete paving is very much a post-war development.

Yes: I really am that sad!

It just struck me as really odd to have these lovingly re-created inter-war street scenes with 1990s footpaths. It's like spotting that Ferrari in the background in the Ben Hur chariot racing scenes!

Think it was brave heart you can see telegraph poles and lines, and remember on dances with wolves on the buffalo hunt there's s scene where you can see the camera chase trucks in the background.

The movie my Rover was used in (Stone of Destiny) was meant to be set in 1950 but they were using cars that weren't built until 1951.

my wife is good friends with a guy called james merrifield,who is a set desginer in film and tv (he recently won an emmy for set design in Little dorrit). I will get her to have a word with him. I doubt he would have made that mistake!
