Wooden posts over old foundations - How do I fasten them?

Other groundworks tasks, such as roads and footpaths, terracing, fencing, foundations, walls and brickwork, tools and plant.

A couple of the posts of a planned pergola will sit directly over some old concrete strip foundations which I guess are around 12-18inches below ground.

Normally I would concrete the posts in to a depth of at least 2 foot but this obviously is not possible here.

Do I need to break a hole through the concrete or is there an easier way? Can those bolt down post anchors be used undergound? Or is there something else more suitable?

Any suggestions would be most welcome......Thanks.....

Personally, I'd jack-hammer a hole through the underlying concrete to get a full-depth post into place, but you could use a footplate anchored to the concrete base and then, once the post is in place, you surround the lot in concrete. However, that seems like a lot of extra work and additional cost, which is why I prefer the hole-popping option.

Thanks for the reply......

Ideally I would break it out, but as I would need to hire a decent breaker to do it I think it would be cheaper to buy a couple of bolt down metposts (or similar).
