I would say the trail is the longest PURE footpath in the world as that is what it is,a 2150 mile footpath only
the great wall, is a wall with a path on top that has been extended ,knocked down and rebuilt many times

The Pacific Crest Trail is 2650 miles long I've done about a quarter of it so far. Runs the length of the west coast of the US through the Cascade mountains etc. Stunning scenery.

Dont know about that Tony, how many have gone missing on The Appalachian Trail over the years.

Big bears and a bit of that `Deliverence`thing going on i think, great book by Bill Bryson (A Walk In The Woods) on the subject.

Deliverance, really good film but really scary in some ways. whenever i hear banjo music it always sends a shiver down my spine after watching this film. ???

the pipes aways send a shiver down your spine, queen mums funeral. massed Irish and Scots pipe, they do move you, but not in the Deliverance way.

bill bryson is a quality author,
all his books work for me because i can identify with the rage he feels at the inequalities of life, but has to keep under wraps for the sake of convention
flowjoe america is a massive place with massive opens spaces,I got lost driving round Mississippi and I kid you not there were tin shacks on the back roads with old boys sitting on swings chewing tobacco
I stopped and asked an old boy for directions to the I78
he kind of grunted something like "wut you say bwoy?"
the banjos started in the back of my mind so i made my excuses and left
ps england has a population density of 990 per sq mile
mississipi is 61 per sq mile

No I'm doing it Ar#e about tit from Seattle southwards. My Brother lives there and we've been doing bits for a few years now mostly late summer but did about 90miles last winter on touring skis. I prefer being outdoors in America in the winter the bears and cougars are all getting their heads down so I'm off the menu. Seen a cougar at long range and several bears close up stayed calm and was ignored. Don't think I'll be doing it again for a while it takes a lot of organising and my wife likes her time off too. I love getting away from it all we're doing a walk in june be about 120 miles through the highlands only taking some porride oats/teabags sugar and a fishing rod and snares. All my kit will fit in a 35 ltr pack so will be travelling light it's the height of the midgie season so will lose equal amounts of blood and sweat but it'll be worth it.

No just following the ridges and sleeping by water at night. Starting at Kirriemuir up through Glen clova over to Braemar then over to Aviemore then Fortwilliam up through Knoydart to Torridon. Dogs coming to.
