i wondered if there was a way to start a thread that only say members with 100 posts could read you know the regular contributers mainly contractors to discuss business related matters such as pricing/quoting.

more detailed stuff on winning work, advertising etc without fear of general internet seeing it etc.

my 2 pence

what like a "private" members area?
I have often dreamt of a rogue customers list, only available to contractors
save a lot of heartache
I know of other business's that have blacklists and it work well

haha don't mention the blacklists lol!!!!!

Agreed, this is a great idea. Needs to be a certain usergroup-only area regardless of posts.

We *could* do this with the current set up, but as Ian the I.T. has sellotaped the engine of a new Brew Cabin into the new server cloud thingy, we might as well wait a while longer so I don't have to do it all twice.

I am quite happy to provide the impartial customer view point to this area of the brew cabin and as no one is based within 50 miles of me and he (SFLandscape) is infrequent poster they should be no conflict of interest, obviously sensitive information will not be disclosed. :)

i may be wrong and put in my place.but a contractors only post should be that.and not open to non associated people. my thought on this is help when pricing specialist items and products. and how much of whatever you need to speed the pricing up of tenders. every one has different overheads and cost of labor so these are not a issue.we all no what you can get for a tenner up north you cant get down sarf and never will ???

What about an area just for you guys on the approved BC contractor/supplier/manufacturer list?
Or, as with the US tractor forum, you pay $20 to support the site, (fair enough)
- which then opens up another sort of sub forum - (still full of rednecks moaning about their teenage kids behaviour  )

the more i think of it the more it displeases me
half the blokes i respect on here are not contractors in the purest sense (and 1 woman that i know off ace :) )
if i need to ask something of another contractor (which i regularly do) i send them a PM
Everything i do is above board, so no need for any 007 stuff, we aint cheap and don't want to be, this is a public forum and I am sure myself and everyone else bears this in mind when posting
I have always had problems with authority figures be it teachers ,coppers,or site agents,
just my 2p worth

my idea was not to protect anyone from customers or secret stuff etc, but i dont want joe bloggs groundworks from down the road stumbling on me saying how i go about finding and pricing work etc. you guys i dont mind as we are widely spread and a mix of trades.

modern search engine index forums making them public.

just done slab for a guy 6.2 x 6.8 x 0.15 metres 1:80 fall, 2 layers of a193 properly tied together, sand blinding, 250mu dpm, 25mm expansion material all the way rd, power float finish. 20 tons mot fill to bring to level guy tells me he had a quote £1k cheaper than mine at £2.5k. took a week to prep and pour and not finshed the float yet with the bad weather. i didn't feel guilty i'd given him written spec and drawing other guy just said he'd do it. no mesh no power float, no depth thickness mentioned etc.

I am a member of a lot of forums, moderator on a few too, some are private by invitation only, what you find is over a period in time is the small private forums drop off and end up not being used or have a single post every couple of months

whilst i understand the thought behind Giles asking for a private forum it will end up the same in my opinion where it will start off busy and have a buzz but soon not to be used, another problem is something will be posted in the contractors only forum and one of the members who has not posted enough on the outside can't see the thread but there is reference or a comment made to it on the outside

it ends up being messy, members feeling pissed because they are not in the elite club so to speak, members then stop coming here because of this problem, it just has a knock on effect.

it also ends up where members start posting for posting sake to get up to the desired amount of posts to gain access to the next level, what you don't want to see is the "yeah me to" or "I think so too" posts with someone just posting to agree on the previous post as that starts to devalue the thread

over the last few months its been superb here, no one has had a direct hit at anyone and on the whole its been a lot of fun, I would hate for that to end over some simple mistake like starting a forum just for people who have posted a lot more than others and the rest can't get access

just my 2 cents worth as we are in the middle of a recession and 2p is a lot of money :D
