Ice skating in a car - .....what happens next?

Just out of interest, what would you do if you were in a four wheel skid like that? I notice they went in with their brakes on, which didn't seem a good move!

daft as it seems you would be better no brakes and driving your way out you would have control then try it out on a big car park with lots of space a skid pan course is well recomended cheers cookie :p :;): :;):

I was in a situation like that on Friday. The road was covered in compacted snow I had scrubbed all my speed and was doing about 15-20 I applied some more light brake and the car began to skid. Immediately off the brakes and slowly started to turning into the corner but nothing the car kept straight lining so I gunned it to see if i could slide it in but again nothing. We were passengers and had absolutly no control at all. The car started to turn but it was too late although the impact was by this time very slow but it did knock a hole in the bumper so thats going to cost a few quid. I had new tyres on and I reckon they were the problem because I couldn't slide on the road in my boots but the car was struggling to get going again on the flat. We hit an earthen bank with a hedge on the top so got lucky there we missed a wall by 2 metres. Normally when you come off the brakes you regain control and have some amount of steering and if you're really desparate a rally driver will always say if in doubt give it some welly which has worked many times in the past it does take balls though as it's not the most logical thing to do. With the ice being what it was in that clip I doubt any thing less than snow tyres would have got you down that hill and there was probably a corner or junction and houses at the bottom no amount of skill would control a car on ice like that.

Maybe so, but the last thing they should have done is get out.

I'd much rather be in a car sliding down a hill than on my arse sliding down a hill with a car sliding alongside.



Just shows the lack of common sense within the general public nowadays

Tommy I couldn't agree more but panic makes people behave in ways they otherwise might not. I'm sure the car did some damage at the bottom of the hill at least with brakes on it wouldn't pick up too much speed.

You can just see that householder's insurance claim - "an empty car came backwards down the road and hit my wall"

Now if they'd had proper kerbs instead of all those dropped kerbs allowing them to park in their front gardens, the car would probably have never left the road.
