Hi sorry if i have posted this in the wrong section but i was not sure what one to put it in, the problem i have is that outside the front of my property on the pavement is a stop cock that works but also on my drive i have one that does not work nor do i have one in my house that works.

Now i am in the middle of doing my front garden block paving lifting up and then putting back down the correct way and i am convinced and also very concerned that i can not turn the water of in the house should i have the need to, so ive dug a hole round the stop cock on the drive and its copper 15mm pipe running into blue plastic pipe.

the other side of the stop cock towards the one on the street is lead.

what is my best option to replace this can i do it myself or do i need the water board to connect it to their stop cock and if so whats the cost of this please.

any help or advice would be great many thanks in advance

regards simon.

You can replace whatever you want within your boundary line but you need a permit to dig up the footpath which thankfully the general public can not just walk in and get.

It will be down to your local water authority (old school) to make the connection onto the live stop cock as it is their property.

You could fit a new stop cock onto the blue pipework (alkathene) its a simple enough excercise or get a plumber to fit one as the pipe work enters the property.

It might be simpler and cheaper to buy a stop tap key in the event that you need to turn off the tap in the footpath, however make sure it is only a tap and not a meter.

I'd excavate around the blue pipe and fit yourself a nice new plastic tap. Easy to do and not expensive.

thanks for the quick replys the blue pipe is right by my front door then it conects onto 15mm copper piper then to a unturnable stop cock then onto lead pipe then out under the footpath of my property to the local water companys stop cock.

should i just dig on my land just after the water companys stop cock and then conect is it 25mm blue plastic pipe into my property then fit a stop cock, this would then eliminate most of the potentail leakage points listed above.

if so can i get a compression conector to go onto lead pipe ?

many thanks simon

Yes, it would be possible to connect to both pipes, using the correct adaptors.

These would be available from places such as City Drainage/Burdens etc

I'm not sure I'd have notified the WA, as you are contemplating doing the job yourself. Surely it will just be an inspection (£47) that is required?
