Hi.
I have just come back to a completed patio in smooth sandstone and found that it puddles...right where the table and chairs will go.. we agreed a fall towards the gate, but it hasn't happened.

The patio is l shaped and the one side is fine as it was steeply sloped anyway and the slabs were laid on concrete. the bit that puddles is 4.5m *3m with a puddle 2*2m of 5-7mm in depth.

so do i get them to redo it?- what's 'acceptable'? They certainly weren't the most expensive contractors... i want a good job but i also want to be fair.

The short answer is it's not acceptable. With proper falls and joints you really shouldn't have any puddling with smooth slabs. Within one year this area of the paving will be either green or black with the growth encouraged by the moisture. If it puddles that much in the summer it will never dry in the winter. Ice will form there as well and will, in time, prematurely wear the pointing.

A slope of 1 in 80 is about the norm, any puddles caught in a recess of the stone or grout should dissappear in 20 - 40 mins. Your specs should meet this or better.
