I worked on a shaft that went down 30metres on shoreham harbour. we were pipe jacking under the harbour. every morning, even though it was sealed, we had 20 ft deep of water to pump out. To sink a shaft/build a cofferdam in the 1700s would of involved thousands of disposable labour ( slaves ) methinks. it was one hell of a fete a? would love to know the answer.

AS THEY ARE STILL DISCOVERING TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL PROJECT, IT WOULD SEEM THAT THE ORIGINAL BUILDERS UTILISED EVERY FORM OF WATER RETENSION AND DIVERSION TO ENABLE THE WORKS . THEY MUST HAVE HAD AN EASY ROUTE TO RECOVER THE TREASURE THEMSELVES, BUT OBVIOUSLY THIS HAS NOT YET BEEN DISCOVERED. aT LEAST IT IS PRETTY EVIDENT THAT THERE IS SOME FORM OF TREASURE THERE, BUT WHAT INTERESTS ME MMORE IS THE FORENSICS THAT COULD BE FOUND. iF THEY COULD ACTUALLY GET INTO THE CHAMBER THEYMIGHT FIND OUT THE FULL HISTORY.

i kinda guess that the original builder had a helluva job on their hands ,but there must of been a good reason to dig a pit that deep and line it with so many layers
i remember reading about it when i was a kid 30 years ago and you would have thought by now with modern technology they could have solved the riddle
my guess is that there is more money for the local economy having it as a riddle than someone actually digging it out
cheers LLL :)

If they can dig a tunnel under the channel, they could easily dig this one out...if they really wanted, but then would it really be worth it? Great ingenuity in the initial project though. really amazin as to this day they still dont know which tunnels did what and maybe there are others they havent yet discovered. :p
