Increasing ground height - What to use?

I want to raise a corner of my garden because it slopes dramatically. I need to raise it about 40cm this will then make it just below the level of next doors garden . I was wondering what sort of materials i would use to raise it, should i be using grit, topsoil etc. I really have no idea. I will eventually lay a patio on top if that makes any difference.

if u are planing on laying a patio i would use mot on the area that will be paved later on and top soil on any un paved ground

Sorry to sound ignorant. But what is MOT and where would i get it

mot=ministry of transport stone
basically its crushed limestone
very good for filling voids where you do not want it to subside
most builders merchants sell it

is this ok for putting against the side of a house?

yes it can go against a houst as long as u are 150mm below the dpc (will showas a black membrain around the wall inbetwwen the bricks)
