Help with patio base - Sub layer depth/edging/tree help

Hi All,

Looking to build a patio 5m x 5m along the boundary line.
Neighbour has trees/bushes that have roots in our garden that I’m not sure how to deal with and looking for any help.

My plan is on the tree/bush side to lay type 1 as the sub layer up to the boundary (50mm enough?) and then patio over it with edging 150mm in from boundary then decorative stones up to boundary.
Do I lay edging before or after laying type 1? I can’t see the link on the site to a “how to� start to finish on preparation through to completion but I’ve probably overlooked one of the pages.
Looking to lay beige slabs. What type of cement/sand mix is best to use? Semi dry? I’m worried about laying this large area of tiles for them to discolour.

Next issue is that there are lots of big trees (these ones are definitely trees) with shallow routes. Any recommendations on how to ensure they don’t uplift any slabs I lay? Landscaping fabrics/ Geo synthetics any use here under the sub base layer?

Oh yeah, forgot about the big tree my wife wants to keep in the corner (despite my efforts to cut it down over the years)…any ideas on how I should work this into the plan? I’m thinking box off (over type 1) with maybe brick or breeze block and then paint.
Can I use the type 1 sub layer (compacted) to then build a wall foundations?

Layout is just a square/ rectangle to keep this simple.

My main unknowns are:
Putting in edging stones and when to do it (before or after type 1 base compacting)?
What to do with the big tree in the corner area? Build a small wall? Type one around it and build up a Bench/step?
What type of mortar mix should I use for beige slabs?
50mm Type 1 deep enough sub base for a patio?

Hopefully I can get started in the next couple of weeks. I’ve ordered Type 1 (3 tonnes) however I suspect I’ll need a bit more.
Aiming to lay the Type 1 and compact to get an idea of how it looks and whether I’ll add a step down to the grass level.

Appreciate any advice available on this.

I reckon all of those questions, bar the tree, are covered in exacting detail on the main website. Have a read of that so I don't have to wear down my fingertips re-typing it all again.

Hi Tony, I presumed it was but wasn't sure which section to look under. you mentioned exacting? I can't see that section?

Any advice on the tree roots and whether you think it'll cause issues down the line?

It depends on the tree....and the site.

Always best to remove them *as long as it is safe to do so* and when you are sure there are no TPO's in force.
