New tipper trailer

I've been umming and ahhing about getting another truck and I just can't justify the expense.. just yet. It's too dicey a purchase at the moment.

So.. I'm thinking of getting a 10x6 Ifor tipper trailer.

Only problem being it'll be mainly towed by my van which is 90ps. I'm thinking of chipping it to 115 in hope that this would be sufficient. Travel will be mainly up the distributor rd and not often loaded to capacity but on occasion it will. Not sure if 115ps will handle it.

Also, I absolutely need a remote. Parking it where it'll be parked is possible but day in day out it'll be a massive PITA and I will jacknife the back of the van at some point. It's almost inevitable. The van is still quite new. So I'm thinking of a caravan twin axle remote mover but not sure if these will handle 3.5 tons on the rare ocassion it'll need to.

Anyone got any experience with caravan/ trailer movers?

Nope, but i just used to wind the jockey right up so it lifted one of the axels off the deck and push it if i had too. Not sure if a mover will push a loaded trailer though, it might, there must be caravans out there that weigh up towards 3 tonnes?

try to avoid the ifor. I have been hugely dissapointed with mine, the build quality and welding is very poor, and having seen the others out there, i would go for brian james next time!

Yeah I used to do that on my 8x5 Ifor but unloaded. This'll be 10 x 6.5 and sometimes loaded and also a good 10 meter push with a few turns. Don't wnat to be doing that of an afternoon. As I say, I can park it. Used to have to reverse it with the tipper 40 yards down an S shaped private driveway and onto a public road but there were times, when tired, when I could just do without it. Also, this time is different. Lots of cars to hit. It's gotta be remoted, which I think can be done. Still researching.

I was very impressed with my old 8x5 Ifor. Always regretted selling it though I'm not adverse to looking at our manufacturers.

Nope, screwed by regulations as per.

I can only tow an 8 x 5 fully laden to 2 tons and if the trailer is under 750kg which it is I can pull a total mass of 4.25 tons hmmmm

8 x 5 is workable but not ideal as panels can't be laid flat. Dunno.

I can't make my mind up whether to go for the smaller 8 x 5 tipper which is under 750kg meaning I can legally pull 4.25 tons in total or go for something like this which is more versatile http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/122024651989

How can you tow 4.25 tons? That's 10 tonner territory.
Train weight is gross minus the maximum vehicle weight, you can't add weight that isn't used by your van into trailer weight.
There's very few vans/ tippers that can even tow 3.5 t these days.

look on the inside of the driver door of your van and the plate will tell you the gross weight you can carry, it might be worded as MAM (maximum allowed mass) gross vehicle weight or train weight

I have a merc sprinter and gross vehicle weight is 5500kg, this is including the weight of the van, what's in the rear of the vehicle and including passengers too, the trailer and the weight of what I am towing

have you got your trailer licence, if you passed your test after 1997 you need to take a trailer test ?

Sorry I meant the entire mass of vehicle and trailer can be 4.25 if I get a trailer that's less than 750kg. if above 750kg then entire mass is 3.5 tons max

Yeah the mass towing weight is 2 tons for my vehicle.

I'm thinking I may as well buy the larger tipper trailer for the extra volume capacity as the weight difference that can physically be towed by my vehicle is so negligable even if the legal difference is 750kg.

that looks good. the only thing is the payload. why not get a 3.5tonne one, you can then get 2.5 tonne in it!

As with everything it's stupidly complicated.

Cos the trailer is under 750kg I can legally have a total train weight of 4.25 tons

If it goes over 750 I can only train 3.5 tons so without a higher license I'd never be legal to fill it anyway if I went bigger.

Also, it's "mainly" for my van which is only legal to take 2 tons.

Effectively I can pull that with 1.3 tons in it and load the van with 500gk. (people and machinery) and be under 4.25 and legal
