I'm an avid reader of the site and of Tony's book and have just completed a small 1.5 sq m paving project using 400x400x40 basic
slabs. I have laid these on a well compacted quarry dust aggregate base and then fairly wet 6:1 mortar made using a mixer with some plasticiser. The beds were 40-50mm.

My main issue was just how difficult getting them level was? What am
I doing wrong? Everywhere states this is the best DIY option
. Is it just lack of experience or was the
Mortar too wet? I spent hours laying and relifting but couldn't seem
to get it right. Always too high too low etc. Compaction with maul was minimal.

Without watching how you did it, we can't really say.

If the bed was consistently too high or too low, you just didn't manage to "get your eye in". Most DIYers find that, after a few square metres (more than 1.5m². anyway!) they start to get the bed right more of the time and have to do less adjustment.

Experience - it cannot be bought!

Can't agree more! i just laid 25m2 and was rubbish at getting it level. Finally got the hang of it on the second day but only had 2m2 left to lay
