There have been conflicting reports in the news this week about our water rates with Ofwat predicting a slight fall over the next few years. those of us in the real world however are expecting a major rise in the near future with predictions of up to a 30% increase on the average bill.
This is because Defra have decided that all private shared drainage systems will be maintained by the water companies after April 2011, this will affect the thousands of private drainage contractors in the UK as well as their employees and suppliers not to mention every rate payer in England & Wales

A body of private contractors and suppliers have started a petition on the Downing Street website in order that a full review be undertaken before the changes take place.
Please take the time (2 mins) to add your name you never know you may be able to save a few jobs and yourself a few quid over the coming years. Downing Street Petition

is this why yorkshire water are inundating me with junk mail and calls about underground drainage insurance, i informed them that i'm a groundworker and the numpty in the call centre didn't know what that was haha. i'll go sign it now.

I may occasionally bring this back to the top of the pile if Tony and the Mods allow.
GB - the water company insurance schemes are a strange set up, in my experience they promise you up to 2/3K worth or repair work on defective drains in any one year but guess what, they then tell you to contact your bricks and mortar insurer as soon as they see any insurable problem. ?

I've been meaning to highlight this issue, but other commitments meant that I've just not had the time to write anything sensible so it keeps being postponed until the next time I have a spare hour.
I've no problem in this thread being 'bumped' as often as is necessary, but it would be better to flesh out the arguments and make it into a 'sticky' so casual visitors will read it.

I ve just been listening to Mark Radcliffe on R2, he had need to use his emergency 24hr cover for blockages and bursts last week.
Only a 2 hour wait in line on the phone to register a burst/blockage.
Now thats what i call service

I went past his house the other day and all looked fine.
My sister lives a couple of miles away and she had to call out the "emergency" menders who relieve her bank account of 25 quid +VAT each month. Called them on the Monday and they gave her an appointment for 3:15pm....the following Thursday!
On the basis that the mother was was visiting, she told them that it was a genuine emergency, with a vulnerable OAP in possession of a genuine blue badge, doctor's note and everything. The lass on the other end of the phone commented on how amazing it was that *everyone* 'phoning in was a disabled OAP on the verge of hypothermia, and asked if she wanted to confirm the appointment for Thursday.
