Hello Board!
I am currently involved in a project where an existing tarmacadam road is to be widened from 3m to 5.5m. The private road runs through a mature woodland and my role is to keep the trees in good health. As I know nothing of tarmacadam I want to ask if it is possible to use porous tarmacadam for road surfaces? How do you make porous tarmacadam (i.e. what should be put in the specification)? Will the old road surface have to be lifted and the wider road laid or can strips be added to either side of the road to minimise material useage and costs?
Thanks

Yes: you could use a permeable/porous macadam, but you need onsite advice for the specification. Get at least 3 site visits from reputable contractors and get them to talk you through their ideas. Hoefully, certain 'common threads' should emerge and you can use this to develop a suitable spec in conjunction with your chosen contractor.
