Hi All
I'm hoping someone can help me out with a query about bedding materials for flags and cobbles. I am laying a patio at my house using some existing large, riven flags (they look like Yorkstone but as I live in Scotland I'm not sure they are). I don't have enough to complete the area and so want to use cobbles to surround the flags. As lots of the flags have wonky edges I'll be using the cobbles in amongst the flags in certain areas.
I've been looking at the website and am planning on using a semi-dry 10:1 (grit sand:cement) bedding layer for the flags, laying an individual bed for each flag (as they are different thicknesses) which will be a minimum of 30mm depth.
Now the website says I need to use a lean mix of 6 parts gravel:3 parts grit sand:1 part sand for the cobbles but would it be possible to use the same 10:1 bedding layer as I am using for the flags instead? What would happen if I did? Would it fail and all the cobbles start to come out? What is the purpose of the gravel in the mix? Just to clarify the bedding layer for the cobbles would be deeper at 50-60mm.
By the way by 'cobbles' I mean big pebbles (not setts) probably sized about 100mm. I'm also on the look out for flat cobbles so if anyone knows of a source for this too that would be really helpful.
Thanks very much for reading. My user name says it all so I could really do with the help!
