I have laid a 200mm sub base using 803 compliant type 1, I have taken the advice from this site and laid it in two 100mm layers. I have used a very heavy petrol wacker plate (A Benford, I think) and done at least 17 passes.

I have today had a delivery of around 18 Tonnes (cement, Ballast etc) and I noticed that the lorry left indentation of around 5 or 6mm (at worst).

My question is; should this concern me or not? as I plan to lay recycled gritstone setts. Do I need to hire a road roller type machine? will it make a big difference? is an 18 tonne lorry always going to make a mark in bare type 1.

Sorry for so many questions but if the base is not right there is little point in continuing until I get it right

I`m not a pro but an 18t wagon will compress the type 1 down due to the sheer weight in a localized area, a roller will give you better compaction than a plate but how often do you have 18 ton wagons on your drive?.

If this is purely a domestic drive i personally wouldn't be worried.

it will always do that. an 18t will mark the pavement sometimes too

Yes, no problem.

A wagon will nearly always leave an "indent" on a stone surface however well compacted it is........so don't worry, you'll be fine.
