Hi, I posted before about the aluminium day joint left in a client's drive. So now it's been taken out, and the gap, as well as a triangle of surfacing which hadn't gone off right the first time, have been re-done. As you can see (hopefully) in the photo, you can tell the old and the new apart (no surprise). What's bothering me now is that the new looks a lot better than the old, and it's made me realise that on close inspection, the old stuff has lots of black smears on the gravel - all over, so it's not due to car tyres. You can see it in the second photo (look closely!). The new stuff looks like it ought to look, imo, and the old looks a bit grey. My question is - did the contractor do something wrong the first time? how did the gravel end up with all these black marks?ImageImage

hard to see rose, those images are poor quality and waaaaaay too big
800 by600 or 640 by 480 works well on most screens
I am guessing there was a time lapse between the 2 installations?
how long was this?
RBG can get dirty same as most paving, maybe the first lot has weathered in a bit?
cheers LLL

maybe consider a clean of it all by a professional cleaning company, or could just be two different aggregates

ive resized and rehosted them

Thanks Giles for resizing! can anyone see the black marks I'm on about - look at the pale gravel in close up and you can see the top surface has been marked - is this down to the machine used to tamp/ smooth it down?
Take the point about the fines content also.

If the gravels were of the exact same colour and content then the method of compaction can be the only reason for the colour difference. RBG should be gently rolled and not wacked or over rolled with the vibration on. From looking at the picture I'd say it was damaged by over compaction because the patches have obviously only been tamped by hand so are much more open in texture. There's no way the contractor could afford to re-do the whole area so it may be best to re-do the patches and try to blend them better. It looks awful but weathering may be your friend here.
Giles is that your Navara top left of the first picture. Is there something you wanna share with us.

I wouldnt worry too much
give it 6 months and it will all look dirty
the unfortunate thing with resin bound gravel is that unless you never go near it,it will pick up dirt
much prefer resin bonded gravel myself as easier to clean
sorry i know that not much help rose but its the truth

The Ronacrete Ronadeck Resin Bound System is machine mixed and hand laid by trowel. See Installing Ronadeck Resin Bound Surfacing.

The pictures posted by Rose suggest a variety of potential inconsistencies:

aggregate blend
mixing / batching on site
resin content
installation

Not the sort of standard we'd hope to see on one of our jobs.

What a shame. A poor advert.
