Ive been asked to replace an old hinged cast iron manhole cover and just wondered what i can replace it with . The existing MH is on a doctors surgery car park . Ive found a steel screw down MH lid with load a load rating of 10 tons but Im not sure how much a bin wagon weighs. any advice would be appreciated.

What size is it?

This page will help http://www.pavingexpert.com/drain05.htm#covers

A Class C250 25 ton cover will suffice......

I am going to use a D400, 100mm deep as at least then i know nowt should happen to it. I am going to bed it on mortar but if the manhole needs raising two inches can i still use mortar or should it be concrete instead?

You can use Monoset Mortar to raise the frame, it'll gain enough strength in 2 hours to take car traffic.
