while digging out the siol for a garage and drive way we came across a gas pipe, we were only around 8" down it seemes to get deeper towards the rear of the garage but gets nearer the surface as it goes towards the drive, shouldnt this be deeper than this?

Services have to be a certain depth under footpaths, roads etc etc. But it seems the regulations cut short of continuing this depth on the private property. Ive found gas at 4" on one job i did. Worst culprits are cable tv. Lucky if they dig an inch, usually seem to slice the ground, push the cable in and stand it in, 9 times out of 10 with none of that green ducting round it, just the cable itself.

Gas, water and electric should be 750mm below ground level particularly if us mortals are installing, moving or working with it, however as most subbie`s were paid on meterage when a lot of it was installed its anyone`s guess at what depth you will put your shovel through it.

Not in a cable area down here, the worst culprits for us are BT cables under the pavement, when we are doing a set of dropped kerbs - we mostly find the main BT cable between 2" and 6" from the surface of the stone base of the pavement!
PS You guys need to get to bed! That time of night is for sleep!

Naaah, sleep is for wimps, or for people who are not sat up waiting for teenage kids (who shouldn`t be out) to come in.
