Hi All,
Just signed up so thought I'd say hi.
This looks like a very useful forum with regards to the type of work I'm doing at the moment so expect to see lots and lots of questions from me!

Hi Tony,
Heh, no I'm actually a research scientist specialising in sustainable urban water management and sustainable urban drainage (SUDS) systems.
But at the moment I've been *drafted* by some of my work colleagues into helping out with the design of a number of drainage schemes which largely consist of the traditional 'pipes-in-the-ground' approach. This isn't my area of expertise, hence the reason why I was browsing these forums for ideas!

I have half-a-dozen pages dealing with SUDS in preparation. I've been given some help (well, quite a lot of help, really) by a couple of the biggest name sin the drainage manufacturing industry, and if I get the time, the new pages should be up just before the end of the year.....but then, it could be January, given the amount of work I seem to have in front of me!

Tony,
If you need more information about anything inparticular to do with SUDS then give us a shout and there's a good chance I'll be able to provide some information or point you in the right direction. I've got hundreds of references, design manuals, reports, journal articles, research papers etc etc on SUDS (it's what I did my doctorate in).
I take it you already know about the best practice design manuals and web resources that CIRIA provide? E.g. http://www.ciria.org/suds/

Yep - I've referred to them pretty extensively, but I'm trying to interpret them in a way that will make them usable to Contractors and keen diyers, and not just the design professionals.
I've had to put the SUDS project on hold while I get on with other, more pressing promises, but I may well give you a shout when I return to the page building and see what you think of the text.

Yes sure, I'll be glad to help if I can.
What you said about giving advice to contractors is interesting - we've had quite a few problems trying to communicate to contractors exactly how we want them to build the systems we've designed. More than anything I think the problems we've had stem from lack of practical experience in building SUDS systems. Unlike traditional pipe systems where there is decades of construction experience, SUDS are relatively new and untried and hardly any of the contractors we've worked with have built anything like them before.
Any simple, straight forward construction guidance would be a big step in the right direction, in my opinion.
