Hi all
Quoting for a big job with a client who doesn't really know what he wants.
About 250m2 of pathways through woodland, graded by machine as they are for disabled access. Can get a 3 tonner and a ton dumper in no sweat.
Am quoting for tarmac (subb'd out after I do the prep) and self-binding like Breedon.
Any other thoughts? It's not my normal type of work but will lead to a lot more, and it would be a nice winter job.
Thanks.

most footpaths are like you say self binding, with a 3x1 tanalised wooden edging eith concreted or staked with 1x1 stakes, what we do for council up here in the peaks or just 20mm-dust well compacted,
there are specification for gradient and rest points for disabled ramps not sure it applies to that but might be an idea to have a few level rest bits, how wide are you going to do it, maybe passing points for wheel chairs and buggies or do they have utility vehicles that would need access like quads or mule type vehicles.
or you could use road plainings as long as its preped right and well compacted, last time we did this used a little tracked dumper worked better than wheeled one.

between 1.5 - 2m wide Giles. Timber edging likely to be 2 or 3 no. 4" 3.6m half rounds to match existing (staked from behind of course). 3 level rest areas planned, gradient is a big issue so we may need to snake it slightly, although preferred plan is to build the middle section up as its high to low to high if you know what I mean.
Just been quoted £90+/ton for Breedon, reckon about 35 tons needed at 75mm depth, based on 20 ton drop.
Planings an interesting idea and my tarmac guy is also quoting to surface it. Trouble is client is a bit arty-farty, wants it to look "natural".

i'd use mot under the breedon save yourself some money and lay the bredon 40mm ish etc, breddon comes out of a quarry about 5 miles from our yard in the peaks get it a lot cheaper than that rd here haha, plaining looks a bit crap to be fair, breedon does look good if its the golden one im thinking of.
i wouldnt nave the edging that high, be a pain and you have to use full on post to stake it rather than the packs of stakes you can buy, plus its very hard to bend and shape half rds,

Thanks Giles. Yes, Breedon is a golden brown. MOT may be better than scalps as you say although we've never had a problem with scalps round here. Edging has to be that high in places due to raised lawns (crazy setup) and I agreeabbout3 or 4x1 but its not "natural" enough for this client...
Spoke to my tarmac guy he wouldn't supply me planings as he reckons they will wash away no matter how well they are compacted.
So I'm not the only one stuck in the office today then!!!
