Hello,

I had a drive laid recently and it is not standing up to being driven on. I belive the PEN number of the tarmac was 125 is this hard enough. I have a car and a transit van which have to turn on the drive way.

Yes, that is the correct pen of bitumen for use in a bitmac for driveways. its very rare for the material to be at fault when a failure occurs in a road surface.without pics i would guess the most likely reason for problems with your driveway surface are insufficient sub-base/depth of tarmac and or poor workmanship

you were not bollocked mate, only the boss does that.
as lll said all of the paving/tarmac lads do a shift and in their free time help others, just be patient as they will help you. :;):

Is this an SMA surface course or not?

Thanks for that. I don't think i described the problem correctly. The tarmac is not moving or cracking, but the very top surfce is crumbling where the vehicles go over it. And it seems to be a bit soft. If you stand on the ball of one foot and turn around the surface will scuff up .

No i don't think it is sma. i believe it was 6mm with a pen of 125.

Turning vehicles such as a transit on a 6mm surface course residential driveway is asking for trouble.....

So what should the surface course be then?

Without seeing the driveway in question it is hard to say - but if turning of vehicles (car) in a tight spot is going to be a common occurrence then I would specify a 6mm SMA material - and if it is of transit-sized vans to be turning, I would specify a 10mm SMA - probably in a 50pen.

can SMA be laid by hand. And would 10mm give a smooth finish?
