Hi there, I'm a relatively keen diyer and this summer I'd like to finally get the front drive/garden sorted out. First task is to get it cleared, the whole area is approx 80sq mts, split 50:50 grass and very badly laid (not by me!) concrete (with no subbase, it was an old lady badly taken advantage of). All I wanted to try and find out first off is how far down I need to clear everything before I start putting the various sub layers back in...? Any guidance or general rule of thumb would be very much appreciated.

Depending what you are going to put back lindley 250 mm below finished height is good

Thanks for that, so if I allowed 300mm - around a foot, what goes down first/next. I know that sort of depends on my finish but I haven't decided on that yet..! I was thinking I do try to get the area ready, then try to do the next few stages...

well it depends on sub grade type ,services, trees etc
we would normally dig down 200-250mm depending
then lay a non woven geo textile terram multitrack or similar
then 2 layers of type 1 stone in 75mm layers ,each layer well compacted by a wacker (heavy duty) or a roller
you are now ready for concrete, block paving or tarmac preparation

Does the non woven geo textile terram multitrack or similar
have to be one piece, or specially jointed/sealed in places, thanks for your advice btw, I really appreciate it..

you can get it in 4 metre wide rolls
we normally just lap it about 300mm and thats it
cheers LLL :)
