Hi

I have been asked to put up a post and rail fence and was thinking of investing in an auger drive and 12inch bit for our mini digger. The digger is a 1.5 ton Takeuchi, has anyone got any experience of using these with an auger? I have hired a hand held stihl one and that was pretty hard work on your own. Have got a tractor mounted post knocker but always find with square posts they twist and can't get them accurate enough. Any advice welcome as I don't fancy hand digging.

Cheers

Jon

post augers on a mini digger are great things,no back breaking work, just make shure the auger hangs down plumb and drive the auger in the ground, but its a big expense for a 1 off job, second hand you will pay £800-1000 if not more

a post knocker is great as long as you clamp the post to the knocker, square posts are better as they sit tight and close to the mast, plumb and true every time, use a leval on the knocker mast to make shure its upright, string line for line ,

MSH :)

WHOA
fail :(
depending on the ground it can be quick to dig a 600mm hole with a grafter,my record is 20 in a day ,dug concreted and up 2 of us
however on realistic ground more like 7-10

A machine driven auger is the business. Makes life easy and safe, be warned you need to find out your machines flow rate. If my memory serves me my tbo16 was around 30 so you need an auger to match if buying on ebay or plant auction. Dont forget, buy it well sell it on after the job.

if the posts twist when you bang them in, try using flat bottomed posts (no point). Takes longer to bang in, but still cheaper than an auger!
