to get council work
we had to join LBCs approved contractor list, this involved all sorts of checks
at the time no one wanted it ,but now everyone is trying to get on it and the door is shut for now.

so contact your local council

also contacts are very important
I know a bloke who is maintenance manager for a PLC if anything local comes up we get to tender for that too

It can be costly, there are companies out there that will handle it all for and even do your tender proposals (good way of actually winning the work as they are thorough) some require health and saftey scheme members etc etc. but the council are forced to give a percentage (could be 25% if memory serves) of work to local small business so thats in your favour

you can set up an alert feature on google using keywords for groundwork tenders, landscape tenders etc..... but make sure you put in your geographic area or county or you will get loads of crap coming through, i am pretty sure that yahoo have the same feature but you can lock it down to the UK to cut out all the dross and american stuff
