Anyone know what this black stuff is on my garden wall.
It's not just in one spot but sporadically all over it
It's probably been there years but I just noticed when I was started cleaning it.
Majority of the stains are on the mortar.
Looks like some sort of mould but I only thought you got mould in poor ventilated areas.
Any ideas to what it is and how to remove it?
Sorry it's a bit blurry

could it be rusted metal filings from an angle grinder or the likes.

One side of the wall faces a paved street, on the other side it faces grass.
The stains are on both sides but probably a bit more predominant on the street side.
So it's unlikely to have been splashed with paint or filings and it to have reached both sides
I've decided to repoint the wall so most of the stains will be removed.
The ones left will be on the bricks. It probably won't notice much as it is an old wall and also it's not unusual to have black speckles in bricks.
Just don't want to repoint and the black stuff returns

I dont know what that is bob but i can tell you that when you use a camera if you partly press the button it will focus, the press harder and it will take a perfect picture everytime. Worth knowing for family shots etc

looks like just an aesthetic issue bob, never saw that before
hope you have decent copings because those LBC rustics are one of the worst bricks for blowing if water gets in them and freezes

The wall was topped with a soldier course and that has failed badly.
That's coming off and I'm going to replace it with some nice reconstituted stone copings.
Started angle grinding the pointing today. when that's done I'm going to replace a couple of dodgy bricks then repoint the lot.
Black stains will hardly notice then.
Just worried after all that work the stains may reappear

PMSL at the auto focus help.
i've heard of contamination in the brick or the mortar, but not at the same time. probably external staining so may not re-appear if it can be removed.
