Quoting on a carpark just now and I have a question about tipper capacity. I need to remove about 1240m3 (unexcavated mass) of mainly clay and will be using 6 or 8 wheelers. I estimate it will take approx 155 6 wheelers or 125 8 wheelers. What are your thoughts and what's your prefered method of workng it out. Never had to shift more than 20 loads at a time and even if I'm out by 10 it'll hurt the pocket so I just want to double check. Thoughts appreciated. Cheers.

generally double your excavated m3 for the bulking effect of excavation, dave_l or someone posted m3 capacity of wagons on another post a while back,
we work on 2.2 ton per m2 of clay about.
but if you go off weight then 8 wheeler can carry 20 tons so 1250x2.2 = 2750 tons / 20 = 137.5 x £200 = £27,500 in muck away. but htink youd get a better rate, i'd be finding a tip that needs capping of or if its good clay a pond lining etc or a farmer with a big hole to fill up.
we've just finished moving 16,000 tons of clay took the best part of a month with 2 13 tonners and tractor trailer on short hall, big job there breaking out. shame your in ireland, think our little cut and trim dozer will be coming soon.

Giles you're a star thanks. That calculator says I need 127 8 wheelers. The way I work it is by multiplying by 1.5 to give an excavated bulk. A 6 wheeler takes about 12m3 and an 8 about 14.5m3. So I divide the loose bulk by the tipper capacity =128. It's either going for capping or maybe might get it away for haulage only to a development needing fill for soakaways if I can get a test cert for it to say it's uncontaminated. £45 a load + £40 haulage thats a wee bit cheaper over here.

hmm i make it about 165 loads for an 8 wheeler which costs us £250 down south ===> £41.33 kk
as has been said i am sure you will get a better rate on such a large amount
might even be best to sun that side out to an earthmoving crowd
thomas bros and Kane seem to have the monopoly on big jobs like that around here
i spoke to the grab man earlier and he said it bulks by double as it is dug out
I.E. dig out 7m3 to fill a 14m3 capacity lorry

i got it at 137, but always be more for clear up and keeping excavation neat etc and always go a bit deeper than planned unless using machine control lasers etc, me and my lad are both excellent machine men but still after a long day you take a bit more out than planned.
speaking to some lads today, going rate for earthmoving for the big lads is £1 for 1m3 moved, this is for staying on site moved around etc like the olympic job, smaller jobs and smaller firms £2 to £2.20 a m3. still big firms with the big toys
but handy for working out like cut and fill we are on we've moved 7000m3 so far and about 1000m3 of soil to go back as well
